Capillaries are the smallest blood vessel we have in our body. When the walls of these blood vessels widen and narrow too quickly, the muscles tear causing leakage, making the skin look more red. Broken capillaries appear as thin red/pink threads that are right under the skin’s surface. They are most commonly found on the cheeks, chin and nose. Unfortunately broken capillaries won’t go away on their own, and are often more apparent as we age and in people who have thin or fair skin. Many things can account for broken capillaries including genetics, wind, sun, temperature changes, hormones, injuries, smoking, alcohol consumption and even washing your face too aggressively.
